A New Protagonist in Oz
Elphaba, the character who will become known as the ‘Wicked Witch of the West’, has suffered prejudice and discriminatory behaviour all her life, due to being born with emerald green skin. Yet Elphaba aspires always to do good in all things and embarks on a journey to meet the ‘Wonderful Wizard’ in order to win justice and freedom for the increasingly oppressed animals of Oz. But when she discovers the truth behind their harassment and persecution, her determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences for her future.
"The best way to bring folks together is to give them a really good enemy."
The citizens of Oz are quick to judge Elphaba, believing the deceits of their leaders who seek to frighten and distract them. An innocent person is condemned as a “wicked witch” and becomes a fugitive from “justice”.
Wicked tells an inspirational story of bravery, defiance and how our ‘differences’ can define us and make us stronger. Elphaba’s incredible strength of character and resolve to ‘do the right thing’ will profoundly change all of the characters she meets along her remarkable journey, not least the shallow, spoilt and very popular university student whose destiny is to become Glinda The Good, and her greatest friend.
